One of the cheapest prevention jobs on the Avalon is winterizing outdoor taps. Skip it, and a split hose bib can soak siding and framing during a January thaw.
DIY checklist
- Disconnect all garden hoses (leave them attached and you trap water in the bib).
- Close the interior shutoff for each outdoor tap if you have one.
- Open the outdoor tap to drain remaining water.
- If you have a bleeder/drain on the interior valve, open it until clear.
- Add an insulated foam cover on exposed bibs for extra peace of mind.
Call a plumber if
- You can’t find an interior shutoff
- The tap still drips after draining
- You want frost-free sillcocks installed
We handle this quickly on seasonal maintenance visits — often the same trip as checking your water heater T&P discharge and sump pump.
